IMC’s Signal Series: New Directions in Irish Jazz Berri | Street Improv Arthur’s Blues & Jazz Club, Thomas Street, Dublin 8 Thursday 2nd April 2020 | Doors 8:30pm/Music 9:00pm Tickets: €10 online/€12 at the door. April’s edition of IMC’s Signal Series sees showers of creativity in two distinct approaches, contrasting the vocal and the instrumental, the word-based and the wordless. The musical-poetic creations of Jenna Harris’ Berri are set against the meditative free jazz of Street Improv , led by saxophonist Adam Nolan. Using an open musical approach while exploring the finer details of dynamics, Berri are a three piece from Dublin. An audience can expect original compositions, the use of words from some of the great contemporary poets of our time, along with interpretations of music from the likes of the Kinks/The Beatles/David Bowie and jazz standards. Featuring leading creative Irish musicians, Jenna Harris (vocals, electronics), Matthew Jacobson (drums), Derek Whyte (bass). “…Berri started as an out-where-the-trains-don’t-run duo placing her voice, frequently processed and looped, alongside the rattles and scrapes of inventive drummer Matthew Jacobson. These days, bassist Derek Whyte adds another dimension to a group that makes clear the difference between a jazz singer and a singer of jazz songs” [Irish Times] Formed by saxophonist Adam Nolan in 2018, Street Improv began as a quartet taking on the jazz standards without their melodies, working from original chord charts. A sound began to develop from gig to gig and eventually the music began to find itself. As improvised melodies developed over set chord changes it came clear that the real magic was in the moment. Focusing on the uncertainty of the next step, the set chords and structures faded away and a new vibe of freedom began. Street Improv strives to make each gig different, creating new landscapes, moods and scenes, through the driving force of in-the-moment creativity, risks and meditative states. The Signal Series is a live monthly double-header concert series from IMC presenting the best emerging and established jazz acts from across Ireland, taking place on the first Thursday of each month in Arthur’s Blues & Jazz Club. Please Note: There is generous but not complete seating available in this venue. Seating will be allocated on a first-come, first served basis.
